Here's a shot I got through the clouds as we flew over Madison. In the middle is the Beltline/Stoughton Road (51) interchange. At the top, the Beltine/I-39+90 interchange.

"Give me a parachute, I'll get off here, please."

I haven't looked for the official plans, but the DOT is saying that the last resort to fix 12/18 (Beltline) and 151 (Midvale-Verona Rd) is to drop the through north-south traffic into a tunnel. I'm having problems visualizing how that's going to either A) free up land to either extend the westbound Beltline offramp and/or B) make it a "real" interchange, which is going to be the last obstacle to a truly free run from Dubuque to Fondy.

Last winter they also floated a little trial balloon (quickly shot down by hordes of outraged suburbians) to put a connector from I-39 to 151 somewhere between Stoughton and Verona. I'm not sure what good that would do, either.

Which means that in 50 years, people will refer to the rebuilding of the "Nakoma Interchange" with the same lack of fondness to be found in current talk of the Marquette rebuild. ;)
